Speed up your Windows Vista

ADVERTISEMENTS

After some time using Windows Vista you will find that Windows Vista become slower and slower. You can make your Windows Vista runs faster by performing the following steps.

Disk Cleanup

Windows Vista becomes slower when your hard disk runs out of space. You can safely remove some of the unwanted files (temporary files, dump files, debuging files and e.t.c.) on your computer by running a disk cleanup. To perform a disk cleanup, click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup. Disk Cleanuo will search for the files you can delete and calculate the disk space used. Choose the files to be deleted and click "OK". You can look into "More Options" tab to free up more disk space. I freed up about 2 giga bytes of disk space during the first clean up.

Scan for Spywares and Viruses

Spywares or adwares always slow down your computer performance by taking up memory space and CPU usage. To prevent the spywares being installed to your computer, do not browse to the website that you not familiar with, use browsers that disallow vb scripts (such as Firefox and Google Chrome) and always scan your computer for viruses and spywares. To scan your computer for spywares, you can use free third party softwares, such as AVG free antivirus, or Windows Vista's Windows Defender. To start Windows Defender, click Start > Windows Defender to start scanning your computer. Also make sure your Windows Vista is always up-to-date because Windows Defender will need new updates to detect new spywares.

Uninstall unused programs

By uninstalling an unused program will help in free up some hard disk space and therefore speed up the system. To uninstall a program, click Start > Control Panel, click "Programs and Features". You can click "Size" column to sort the installed program by size and then choose the program you are not going to use in near future.

Disk Defragment

Fragmentation makes your hard disk do extra work that can slow down your computer. Disk Defragmenter rearranges fragmented data so your hard disk can work more efficiently. To start defrag your hard disk, click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter. Click on "Defragment now" to start the hard disk defragmentation process. The whole process might take from a few minutes to a few hours depending on how large and how "fragment" is your hard disk.
